We’ve been talking a lot about the house and looking around here than we have about work. Mostly, that’s coz we don’t take photos at work. That’s a tad weird when you’re new to the place. My work at ARM goes well. I’ve been given a bunch of responsibility now and am quickly learning that customer requests are the top priority, even if you really really want to finish what you’re working on. Sort of. There’s a balance to be […]

Our little street is a nice one. A no exit one, which makes it quiet. Just big long rows of terraced houses, all probably exactly the same size as ours. The power lines are interesting – they all spread out from 1 pole which happens to be right outside our house. Piece by piece, we’re accumulating furniture making our new home. Magazines help much. And having a bit of a starting budget to play with. Rob’s computer now has a […]

In keeping with our new plan to visit every pub in Cambridge, here’s our first three! Fort St George Our first pub we went to was a riverside one, Fort St George. While Rocco (who we were meeting for dinner) had told us it was along a beautiful section of the River  Cam, we didn’t quite believe it until we saw it. Hanging willows, some swans, rowing clubs all the way along. It really was a  beautiful stretch of river. […]

… and over the next few years, Rob and I hope to visit all of them. Sometimes it’ll just be to pop in for a quiet pint. Others will be done as part of a drinking run (3 in one night?). But hopefully we can visit all of them. Even the far away old man pubs with no tv. Should be culturally interesting, if nothing else. At the bottom of this post is a graphic of all the pubs as […]

It’s summer over here and the days are quite long with sunset at 8pm or so. Seems like a good excuse to make use of our newly tidied garden. We discovered that the back garden shed includes lots of things for our use, including garden furniture. A simple meal was had – Spaghetti Bolognese with beans. And beer. We plugged in the laptop at the kitchen window for music (the only piece of technology plugged in at this stage – […]

After we bought that table and chairs, the other thing we got straight into was buying plates and cutlery, pots and pans. This series of shots basically shows you our wee kitchen, the only down fall of this property (water damage to the floor, peeling paint on the walls) but is nice enough. In the UK, it’s popular for pots and pans to be coloured, so we got some modest ones, but good quality. Rob decided to cook carbonara for […]

It took us a while to find. The market is very competitive here. Just renting, not buying. But for now, it’s ours. And we’re so thrilled… However, my first half hour with this red door here wasn’t all joy. My keys didn’t work and it was raining! Darn it! But the real-estate agent came around and showed me how to get to the back door (we go through the second red door and walk round the back. 🙂 ) And […]

A week ago, Rob finally got to start work at Bosch. After 9 weeks since his last day at Davey in Melbourne, it was like sending a bird out of the bloody nest for me, but a great relief for both of us. Bring on the 2 pay checks! Because Rob’s office, Bosch Lawn and Gardening, is in Stowmarket, he has to get an hour long train to work. I see a car in our future, I’m sure…. He works […]

For the first month we were in Cambridge, we stayed at 3 different accomodation places. Firsly, was the self-service apartment in town. We loved this for its location, but thought the skinny stairway up and down was a bit of a mission. particularly with all our luggage. Our second accomodation place was another self-service apartment much closer to the train station, about a 10 min walk. We loved the area though, so much that we made sure to look for […]

Absolutely everyone owns a bike in Cambridge. The city is very flat, so it’s easy to cycle. There are bikes, and bike stands, everywhere. Especially outside pubs. Because of this, and so we could ‘fit in’, we bought a pair of bikes. I have not rideen a bike since I was, like, 15. We’re from Auckland! No one rides a bike there! It involves hills and mountains and rain and lots of car dodging. Buggar that crap. Even in Melbourne, […]

On another of our weekends, we decided to check out one of the local museums. We decided to go to the general history one, the Fitzwilliam Museum (link). It’s FREE which is fantastic. They had a typical array of items for a standard english museum. There was armour and weapons. There were Roman and Greek statues and facades. Most of these were partial pieces or imperfect items which makes me think ‘B-grade’. But I suppose you can’t really compare a […]

Our first few weeks in Cambridge have been relaxing as we’ve been settling into something of a routine. I was working for the first 3 weeks and then Rob started working too. We’ve stayed in an apartment and a B&B for the first month while we found and moved into our rental property (more on that soon). Our weekends have involved continuing to explore the city. The architecture of the buildings are magnificent. I’m sure I’ll not tire of them […]

So, after our three weeks of interviews and travels, on Saturday 10th July we trained up to Cambridge for the move. It was a mission to drag our suitcases and bags from Caroline’s place through 40mins on the tube (with a change in the middle) and up to King’s Cross regional platforms. But there was such a relief once we got there. No more travelling for a while now. Let’s settle into this new place. Cambridge is approximately an hour […]

So, the last blog post was an overview of all the Harry Potter sightings we want to do. So far, we have done 4 of them. 10 more to go! So, we went to London Zoo as previously posted and saw 1. Reptile House, London Zoo On one afternoon wandering around London, we also went to try and find 4. Gringott’s Bank, London. My instructions had been to go to Australia House, the Australian embassy in London. Well, we got […]

So, as we’ve travelling around, I’ve been trying *trying* to see as many Harry Potter film locations as I could. So, below is a Harry Potter wishlist with screenshots from the movies of what they looked like there. Not all the scenes in the movies are of real places unfortunately, but below are a bunch which are. I do not own any of these images, Warner Brothers does! 1. Reptile House, London Zoo – When Harry and the Dursleys go […]
