Ely is a town just a 15 minute train trip away from Cambridge. We’d heard it had a nice Saturday market and, from our tourist book, a magnificent cathedral. So, we climbed on a train and headed up the road. Ely has a beautiful city center with winding streets and shops in old buildings. The town is quite small, but it does have a varied craft market and delicious farmer’s market. We did a little shopping on our way out. However, […]

We love our house. But. Our house has no cupboards, except the kitchen. So, there’s no cupboards for linen; no cupboards for electrical cables; no cupbaords for sports gear… No cupboards! Gah! So, the compromise is to make places to hide the things of life. With boxes. But, this looks yucky. It might be hiding linen, towels, backpacks and more, but it doesn’t look visually pleasing. So, we went out and bought some simple decorating materials. And now, it all […]

We’re still setting up house. Because we’ve been buying furniture from Argos, its all flat packed. We still don’t have a car so transport is a bit fun… Its nice to have new things, but essentials like a coffee table are just satisfying. We also have the less essential, but super tidy, shoe cabinet so then we can hide all our shoes at the front door. Fantastic. Big thanks to Rob for putting all the stuff together!

Hi everyone, So, a general update. Not everything that goes on gets blogged, mostly because not everything has a photo taken of it. Shocking thought, I know. But it’s a reality. So, verbally, here’s some of the cool things that’ve been going on with us. We had a little housewarming party at our new digs. It was mostly my work mates who came, two of my neighbours and an old school friend, Abbi. Rob’s work mates live all over the […]

The third and final post from our NZ trip is about our friends. We have a varied and great group of friends, even though we don’t see them that often and are hopeless at keeping in touch. But we had some great wee adventures while we were home, and got to catchup with most of our mates. Was brilliant to see you all! We had dinner with the Compsci crew at the delicious Kirin in Parnell. Great japanese food, and […]

One of the key things Rob was looking forward to about going to NZ was kitesurfing with his brother. The winds in Melbourne are great for kitesurfing, but its always better if you’ve got a buddy to go with. The boys went out both at Pt Chevalier and at Snell’s Beach. Was pretty neat conditions at Pt Chevalier when we went down. The tide was so far out, but there were dozens of kites out. It took the boys a […]

I’ve been slack. You see, I missed some posts. Important posts too. After we left Melbourne, and before we flew to London, we were in New Zealand. For 3 whole weeks. And I haven’t posted anything about it at all! Hopeless, yea? So, we were in NZ, which was wonderful. We got to see our family and friends. There were dinners, movie trips, and we only spent two nights out of town, optimizing the time at home! This post is […]

As a farewell for Stewart and Amanda, Rob made pancakes and bananas for breakfast. Yum! He decided to be fancy and do banana flambe. Bring on the flame! But first, dice your bananas. Add them to your hot pan. Add a tablespoon of golden syrup. Fry and let the bananas caramelise. Now, it’s time for alcohol! You’re meant to use rum, but we didn’t have any. So whisky will do. Add the whisky to the super hot pan, tip a […]

More pubs seen from the list! On Fridays at work, the guys all go to the pub for lunch. It’s a nice idea and gets you away from the office and catchup with people in a more social environment. But they’re quite picky about where we go because they hate having bad food for lunch. The Wrestlers So, they like to go to The Wrestlers on Newmarket Road because it serves beer (as any good pub should) and top-notch Thai […]

We had our first visitors last weekend gone. A couple of Rob’s friends from Melbourne, who were now living in London and settling too, came up for their first look at Cambridge. It was a pretty sweet day. Firstly, we had lunch outside King’s College… …before sending Stewart and Amanda into King’s College famous Chapel. (Stewart’s 3 photos below!) It was Stewart’s birthday, so we got him a cake. Because it was a warm day (a balmy 20 degrees!) we […]

There are really a lot of pubs in Cambridge. Particularly near our place. Every other street has a pub. Of course, people catchup and socialize in pubs how kiwis and aussies do in cafes. Sort of. But anyway, we’ve been systematically visiting all of them and working out our favourites. The White Swan Just down the road is the White Swan, which is essentially an old man’s pub with a big dining area. It was nearly empty when we went […]
