In October, we got to go back to NZ for a wonderful 2 weeks, namely for Dad’s 70th Birthday. Happy Birthday Dad! We had 2 parties for Dad’s birthday. One with the family and one with Mum and Dad’s friends. The family one was on a sunny spring day at home with all the cousins and my Aunty and Uncle. Dad’s cousin in Spain delivered a gift over with Rob and I – a delicious looking bottle of Spanish cognac. […]

Some of you might have heard of Heston Blumenthal and his marvellous feasts he would prepare on his TV show. Rob and I used to love watching that TV show in NZ and Australia – He loves using dry ice to freeze ingredients. He make things that don’t look edible (like grass and soil garden) be delicious and the experience always seems to be wondrous. Well, he has a restaurant in his home town, Bray, just outside London – The Fat […]

After a great first day, we were eager for some more walks and abbey ruins. Luckily, Yorkshire is happy to oblige – we set off for Rievaulx Abbey and walking the Yorkshire Moors. The Moors are quite beautiful. The weather was still crisp, but the walk over the hills and through the woods was great. Then we came around the corner, and there was the abbey! It’s huge! Rievaulx Abbey was founded in 1132 by twelve monks from York as a mission […]

We couldn’t afford to go home for Christmas last year which sucked. But we were inspired by Caroline’s Orphans’ Christmas she invited us to in 2010 so decided to host our own. We had 4 Kiwis come up from London  and 2 Kiwis from down the road for 3 days of festivities. Brilliant! The weather was drizzly and awful while everyone was with us. We did manage to make it into town one morning to wander around and show them Cambridge […]

We were in NZ for a month, all up. It was brilliant seeing all our friends and family. What was not brilliant was some of the worst Christmas/New Years weather we’ve ever had. But at least, socially, everything was great. We got to catchup with all our friends at parties, weddings and baches. The Bilkeys were in top form, as usual. We saw various parts of the Mountain whanau at Mum’s, or the zoo, or up north. All the little […]

We got to catchup with almost all of our friends when we were back in NZ. (Sorry to those who we didn’t get time to see!) The highlight was certainly Eric and Prue’s gorgeous wedding! But first, there was a Hen’s party. The start of our day was learning to lawn bowl from Rob’s grandpa, GramBob. Don’t you love Prue’s dress? It was full of ruffles! No photos from the rest of the day, but it involved a drawing class, […]

Our friend Richard introduced us to Sloe Gin – a sweet syrupy after-dinner drink that’s made from sloes and gin. Now, we didn’t know what sloes were, but we have a much better idea now. And we didn’t know how to make sloe gin, but thanks to Richard we now do. Firstly, we have to pick the sloes. Stage 1: Picking the Sloes Well, before you actually pick the sloes, you have to walk a long way to the sloe […]

On the 4th day of our trip to Munich we had a bike ride down the river Isar. The Barvarians treat the river bank like the beach and it was packed, so we had quite a bit of cycling to get to a nice quiet spot. We took a BBQ and some refreshments down to the river with us to make sure that we enjoyed ourselves. Once we were settled, we got the BBQ going ( two man ) to […]

I have these wonderful friends. Well, I have many friends, but there’s particular group that’s quite special. They’re my crew from our undergraduate days when we all were studying Computer Science. What’s quite cool is that out of 10 Compsci mates (Mel, Andrew, Belle, Eugene, Charlie, Bruce, Dave, Simon, Jude and myself), 6 of us live here in the UK now. Mad, right? We have caught up with them at various times over the last year but never in Cambridge. So, I sent out […]

Every year since 1974 (with the exception of last year, apparently) Strawberry Fair has been on in Cambridge. It’s is a free volunteer run community music, entertainments, arts and crafts fair. In other words, a hippy-fest. For a free event just up the road, we thought we should go have a nosy. The fair is *packed* with food stalls, retail stalls, rides, activities, performances and demonstrations. There was even a stall of New Zealand products – pounamu and other taonga. […]

Mel made the move over to the UK just before Christmas. Now she has a job, and has an apartment and is officially living in London. Considering all these factors, it was time to crash on her couch. And we celebrated with cocktails. Our first day out and about, we went to have breakfast at Providores and Tapa Room . It had delicious delicious coffee and yummy yummy breakfast. (Photos below are Mel’s – thanks hun!) The other activity of […]

For the last four years, Rob and I have been living in Australia away from our family and old friends at home. We knew we were only making the distance  further when we moved to the UK too. But one thing has made the move  a little easier – my best friend Mel has made the move to the UK too. So, while Rob was away in China for his work trip, Mel came up (with Paul too!) to hang […]

For New Year’s Eve, we had heard rumours of Hogmanay in Edinburgh – a street party and concerts for 1000’s of people. We’d also heard how Edinburgh is freezing that time of year and every other year Hogmanay gets cancelled. Despite these negative points, with a bunch of friends going up to brave it as well, we booked our flights and shared acommodation. The apartment was pretty sweet. We stayed with Mel, her friend Paul and Eugene. Was great to […]

Because we actually know people in London (and not too many in Cambridge), it seemed like the better idea to head down to London for the Christmas holidays. And we had a *wonderful* time. Tripping Around During the week, we did touristy things and caught up with a bunch of people, namely Graham G. and Andrew M., Wendy and Abbey and finally Jess C at a Japanese noodle place I’d been dying to try. We tripped around London a bit […]

Rob and I really really enjoyed the All Black tour to Europe. While we didn’t go to see any of the games, we watched every single one on TV. It was great to be able to watch the games at night over a beer instead of watching the trinations at breakfast over a juice. Our favourite game was the All Blacks vs England coz we went down to London and caught up with a bunch of mates to watch it. […]

Hi everyone, So, a general update. Not everything that goes on gets blogged, mostly because not everything has a photo taken of it. Shocking thought, I know. But it’s a reality. So, verbally, here’s some of the cool things that’ve been going on with us. We had a little housewarming party at our new digs. It was mostly my work mates who came, two of my neighbours and an old school friend, Abbi. Rob’s work mates live all over the […]

The third and final post from our NZ trip is about our friends. We have a varied and great group of friends, even though we don’t see them that often and are hopeless at keeping in touch. But we had some great wee adventures while we were home, and got to catchup with most of our mates. Was brilliant to see you all! We had dinner with the Compsci crew at the delicious Kirin in Parnell. Great japanese food, and […]

We’ve been talking a lot about the house and looking around here than we have about work. Mostly, that’s coz we don’t take photos at work. That’s a tad weird when you’re new to the place. My work at ARM goes well. I’ve been given a bunch of responsibility now and am quickly learning that customer requests are the top priority, even if you really really want to finish what you’re working on. Sort of. There’s a balance to be […]

On our last night in London before we went to Cambridge, we caught up with Andrew and one of his mates for some drinks about town. Was great to see Andrew! First up was the The Soho Arts Theatre Club where they served cocktails in teapots! Great fun! Next, we tubed up to Bar Kick in Shoreditch. First up was shots, but then we played foosball with drinks in hand. Brilliant! Lastly, we wandered over to Brick Lane to check out […]

So, I went back to NZ for a brief 3 1/2 days. It was a great 3 1/2 days though. Got to catch up some friends, and went out every night, and generally had a great time. So thanks to everyone who helped make it all fun, and sorry to the guys who I didn’t catch up with this time. So,
