In the last 4 years, we’ve visited so many sites in Europe. Many of these were top touristy cities like Paris, Rome, Berlin and Barcelona. But this time, we went somewhere a little unusual – the northern-most part of the United Kingdom. We visited the beautiful Shetland Islands. And the key reason? Puffins. Google told me that the Shetland Islands was one of the few places in the UK you could see Puffins without getting on an hour long boat trip. Indeed, for our first […]

This year, I (Rob) turned 30 and I was lucky enough to receive some lovely presents. One of them was a hot air balloon ride over Cambridgeshire. First thing’s first – we helped setup the balloon. It was an nice calm afternoon, perfect for some lazy lofting about in the sky. The prevailing wind would normally drift the balloon toward Cambridge itself to see the colleges, but there was very little breeze at all. It was still very relaxing. The […]

Rob is fascinated by Ancient Roman history. A magnificent society with an empire that sprawled across entire continents and then collapsed. Emperor Claudius ordered the first major Roman invasion of England in 43 AD and by 50 AD the Romans controlled most of England. In 122, rather than conquering the wild north British tribes, Emperor Hadrian built a coast to coast barricade. At 73 miles long, this was one of Rome’s greatest engineering projects. We had to see it. Housesteads Roman […]

Scotland is a long drive from Cambridge – 9 hours without stopping. Yikes! To break the trip up we stopped in Yorkshire for 1 night on the way up and 1 night on the way down. I may have also arranged the Yorkshire stops to be near some Harry Potter movie locations. Yes! Malham Cove Our first stop on the way to Scotland was at the small town of Malham in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It’s a beautiful part of […]

An adventurous part of our trip to Scotland was seeing some Harry Potter movie locations. Yep, there are a few, but we only went to two. Firstly, we went to Loch Etive – a picturesque lake at the end of a long valley. The lake edge was used in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 as one of the beautiful camping spots. This scene was where Ron has an argument with the others and leaves the group.   […]

Recently, Rob and I took a week long roadtrip up to the Scottish Highlands and back again. I wanted to get out the city for a bit and get some space. There was plenty of that. I loved the mountains! The Highlands are amazing. A different kind of beauty to the mountains and lakes in NZ, but beautiful all the same. Below are 2 of the Three Sisters of Glen Coe. The main road runs past them and they seem […]

Because it was the Queen’s Jubilee this year (that is, she’d been the Monarch for 60 years), Britain got a 4 day weekend instead of the usual 3 for Queen’s birthday. We figured that was an excuse to go for a trip, so took some friends to Norfolk for a look’n’see. First stop on our drive to Cromer was Sandringham House, where the Queen has spent her winters since she was a child. We got to be good Samaritans on the way […]

During our first full day in Llandudno we decided that it would be nice to walk up Mount Snowden, the tallest mountain in Britain. So we packed all our gear and food and drove out to meet our fate! Unfortunately the weather had other plans. It was rainy and the clouds were low. As we drove up and up, we could see less and less. Although we were not completely happy with walking in the rain, the lack of car parks was the […]

One Tree Hill is an icon in Auckland’s landscape – the largest volcano on the skyline with a tall monument at the top. It’s surrounded by a great park, Cornwall Park, and is a nice place to walk dogs. So that’s what we did. The hill used to have one tree at the peak, but due to a chainsaw attack, the old pine tree that was there died. So now it’s nicknamed ‘None Tree Hill’. The local iwi don’t want […]

While we were at Lake Tarawera, we thought we should do some touristy stuff. Namely, a stones-throw down the road, we wanted to see The Buried Village. The little museum at the Buried Village was very interesting because of all of the photographs. The Pink and White Terraces ones were great. Back in the day, tourists visited the terraces for bathing, and some would record their trip, like in the photographs below. It was fantastic to see these images and how marvellous the […]

All done with Canada, we leapt on another plane (the All Blacks safety video on the AirNZ flight was classic) to get home for Christmas. We spent Christmas Eve at the Harte’s. We had a lovely 3 course meal which Helen ( Liz’s mum ) made – a salmon salad, roast turkey and trifle dessert. NOM NOM. Christmas day we headed up to Snells beach for the Bilkey Family Christmas. Firstly, we went straight out to get some scallops for […]

So the third day we were in Munich we were taken for a hike around some of the Alps. View Munich Alps in a larger map We met at 10am with Heike and Lukas at Walchensee, which is about 1 hour south of Munich. We started the day with a nice relaxing gondola ride up the mountain ( easy hike so far ) which took us up to 1100m elevation. There was an amazing view from the top. From the […]
