As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, we tried to visit every pub in Cambridge. And while we weren’t successful, we visited many many pubs and they were easy to enjoy. Low key decor, rough around the edges, mismatched furniture with a constant supply of real hand-pulled ale. I didn’t like beer before I moved to the UK, but real ale taught me better. Real Ale is always cellar cool (not chilled) and has low carbonation (not foamy) with well rounded […]

When we moved to Cambridge, we noted that there were 92 pubs in Cambridge and we aspired to visit every pub in Cambridge. Well, we had a good crack at it, but we were unsuccessful in our mission. We ended up 14 pubs short of the full list. Drat! Still, we visited plenty of wonderful pubs, and here are some of the last ones we visited. The Mill This pub is down next to the river Cam next to some […]

As some of you may remember, Rob and I are trying to visit every pub in Cambridge. There were 92 when we first moved over and we’ve visited a lot of them! However, we’ve only posted 34.  A shocking effort! So here is a catchup of pubs mostly from the past year, but some are from ages ago. Yes, there were some from the early days that we forgot to post. But never mind that, we’re posting them now! Quinns […]

Some of these pub photos are old. Strangely, there’s one pub from July 2011 that I forgot we visited, so didn’t catalogue sooner. So we’ll start with the oldest photos, The Rock, a Greene King pub that’s right on a main road. So while it was lovely to sit out in the sun, the traffic whizzing past wasn’t so great. Still, it one of the better pub options near the Cineworld cinema. Haha! I’m wearing glasses. Don’t need those since the […]

Back in April this year, we participated in the CAMRA Ale Trail 2012. Basically, we had to visit 10 real ale pubs during a 6 week period and have a pint at each. Brilliant idea! The rules were: you visited one of the designated pubs on the form, had a pint, and got a stamp. The prize at the end? A t-shirt. Some of these pubs were locals of ours that we had already visited previously. But we did get […]

A few weekends ago we decided to go for a road trip out to Suffolk to have a look around. Primarily to see Bury St Edmunds, the Greene King Brewery and a small town called Lavenham. When wandering through Bury, the walkway went through a derelict cemetery.. I still don’t understand how they treat cemetery’s like they do. Bury St Edmunds is a lovely old town with quite a bit of history. Below I am standing outside one of the old Abbey gates. It is host […]

As the weather started to get warmer, we started migrating back out to the pubs, many are new, as we endeavor to visit every pub in Cambridge. Let’s continue on with our list then, eh? The first pub here is the Corner House, a popular haunt of the my hockey team after matches. After every game, we’d have a meal and a pint – an English tradition I might have to take home with me. I’m wearing my hockey gear […]

Our pub visiting has been very very quiet over the winter. Typically, once you get home on Friday, you don’t want to venture out into the weather and on Saturday you’ll just go somewhere close. I’m sure we’ll be more adventurous once the weather warms up! One of the nice things my hockey club does is have ‘teas’ after every game. That is, we go to a pub and have some food and drinks after the game. The Earl fo […]

We’ve been visiting some more pubs around Cambridge, and indeed we forgot to post one of our summer ones! Still, this post has 5 great pubs we’ve visited in Cambridge, and they’re all pretty great. The Kingston Arms is one of our locals and a beauty at that. It has a lovely beer garden out back and serves delicious food too! Another local we’ve visited with top-notch food is The Geldart. We went up there on a Friday night and […]

More pubs seen from the list! On Fridays at work, the guys all go to the pub for lunch. It’s a nice idea and gets you away from the office and catchup with people in a more social environment. But they’re quite picky about where we go because they hate having bad food for lunch. The Wrestlers So, they like to go to The Wrestlers on Newmarket Road because it serves beer (as any good pub should) and top-notch Thai […]

There are really a lot of pubs in Cambridge. Particularly near our place. Every other street has a pub. Of course, people catchup and socialize in pubs how kiwis and aussies do in cafes. Sort of. But anyway, we’ve been systematically visiting all of them and working out our favourites. The White Swan Just down the road is the White Swan, which is essentially an old man’s pub with a big dining area. It was nearly empty when we went […]

In keeping with our new plan to visit every pub in Cambridge, here’s our first three! Fort St George Our first pub we went to was a riverside one, Fort St George. While Rocco (who we were meeting for dinner) had told us it was along a beautiful section of the River  Cam, we didn’t quite believe it until we saw it. Hanging willows, some swans, rowing clubs all the way along. It really was a  beautiful stretch of river. […]

… and over the next few years, Rob and I hope to visit all of them. Sometimes it’ll just be to pop in for a quiet pint. Others will be done as part of a drinking run (3 in one night?). But hopefully we can visit all of them. Even the far away old man pubs with no tv. Should be culturally interesting, if nothing else. At the bottom of this post is a graphic of all the pubs as […]
