While we were back in NZ, it was also my grandmother’s 88th birthday. We went up to Snell’s beach to enjoy a bit of sunshine and celebrate with the family.     Happy Birthday Ten! It was great going back to NZ and seeing our family and friends. We had a wonderful time, but we had to get back to the UK. Before that, we’re stopping off in LA for a couple of days! Until next time…

In October, we got to go back to NZ for a wonderful 2 weeks, namely for Dad’s 70th Birthday. Happy Birthday Dad! We had 2 parties for Dad’s birthday. One with the family and one with Mum and Dad’s friends. The family one was on a sunny spring day at home with all the cousins and my Aunty and Uncle. Dad’s cousin in Spain delivered a gift over with Rob and I – a delicious looking bottle of Spanish cognac. […]

Apologies for the long break in our travel blogging. Last we posted, we were in Maulbronn visiting an Abbey. But our main reason for this European adventure was to go to James and Meike’s wedding in Illingon, Meike’s home town. Many of James and Meike’s friends and family had shown up from all parts of the world and we spent 3 days of getting to know the new in-laws and partying. The wedding service was really lovely. It was in both […]

Granada was the main part of this trip to Spain, but we spent an afternoon in Malaga to visit my Dad’s first cousin, Kevin. Kevin is our only relation on Dad’s side of the family that we have contact with. It was wonderful to catchup with him and hear all the family stories about Dad’s parents, aunty, uncles and grandparents. He also took us to this amazing wine bar in Malaga – Antigua Casa de Guardia Vinos. A super traditional […]

Rob officially has his permanent residency visa (woohoo!) so we’re here for a couple more years at least. But getting this visa meant we could also start our non-domestic travels again. Before Christmas, we went to visit James and Meike in Munich! We were happily drowned Christmas decorations and German hospitality. I love their homemade advent calendars! We were treated to delicious German-style breakfasts with boiled eggs, hams, cheeses and fresh bread. Rob also helped Meike make some Christmas mince […]

My grandmother on my Dad’s side was called Williamina Moore Lynch Harte and she was born on the 7th December 1917 in a town called Port Glasgow. She’s since passed away, but Rob and I decided to visit the town My great grandparents had two daughters, Isabella and Williamina. They thought my grandmother was going to be a boy and picked the name William. When she was born a girl, they stuck with the name anyway. Most people called her Mina. In […]

On our Scottish adventure we decided to see a bit of Davidson family history. So we headed north er, just past Inverness, to a town called Dingwall. Here, situated at the top of the hill, is Tulloch Castle, the ancestral home of the Davidson clan. Tulloch Castle was bought by Henery Davidson in 1762 and stayed in the family until the 20th century. The castle is decorated inside and out with Davidson crests, tartan, and memorabilia. They even have Davidson tartan […]

We were in NZ for a month, all up. It was brilliant seeing all our friends and family. What was not brilliant was some of the worst Christmas/New Years weather we’ve ever had. But at least, socially, everything was great. We got to catchup with all our friends at parties, weddings and baches. The Bilkeys were in top form, as usual. We saw various parts of the Mountain whanau at Mum’s, or the zoo, or up north. All the little […]

When we got back to Auckland, we had a few days to spend time with our families. One of our days was spent at Auckland Zoo, which has developed quite a bit since we last went a few years ago. We went with Mum, Matta and my younger cousins Emere, Hana T and Takimoana. The kids must’ve played on every playground in the whole zoo as we wandered around. We loved the new tiger enclosure. There’s a pool right next […]

After a few days in Auckland catching up with the parents again, we decided to head north for a couple of nights. First, we went to the beautiful Rawhiti, where we hadn’t been since our wedding. It was a bit grey and gloomy, but still a great break. Matta and Rob got straight in the boat to go fishing. You can see the tiny dot of their boat in the distance of the bay… We weren’t having fish for dinner, […]

All done with Canada, we leapt on another plane (the All Blacks safety video on the AirNZ flight was classic) to get home for Christmas. We spent Christmas Eve at the Harte’s. We had a lovely 3 course meal which Helen ( Liz’s mum ) made – a salmon salad, roast turkey and trifle dessert. NOM NOM. Christmas day we headed up to Snells beach for the Bilkey Family Christmas. Firstly, we went straight out to get some scallops for […]

Our last day in Munich was a scorcher. Thankfully, half of it was spent indoors at the stunningly reconstructed Residenz – the Munich Residence. It was the political and cultural centre of first the dukes, then the electors (from 1623) and finally the kings of Bavaria (1806 – 1918). As the residence and seat of government of the Wittelsbachs. This is the Grotto Courtyard with a statue of Perseus in the middle holding Medusa’s head with his foot on her […]

Rob has 2 cousins this side of the world. One is the beautiful Caroline in London, who we’ve caught up with a few times since we moved to the UK. But there’s another cousin who we’ve been neglecting since we’ve moved to Europe – James in Munich. Rob and I haven’t been to Germany before, so thought visiting James was a brilliant opportunity to check this country out. We were in Munich for 5 days and each was an adventure. […]

While Dad and Mum (aka Barry and Helen) were visiting Cambridge we went and saw the Imperial War Museum in Duxford. The place is a massive complex – it used to be an Air force base. The museum has planes, cars, artillery and guns from most of the wars Britain was involved with. There was also a whole building dedicated to The Blitz, which was very interesting. They had a large selection of planes including b-17, b-52, Concord, and even […]

So a few weeks ago mum and dad came to visit and they brought us some prezzies from back home. They came with some of their friends, David and Honor, who came up from London to visit us in the second week. I have to say that mum and dad did bring some wonderful weather and we certainly basked in it with a few lunches in the back garden. The plan was that we would stay in Cambridge for the […]

A few weeks ago, Rob and I got a big treat. We had *2* sets of cousins come visit us in a weekend. We were stoked! My cousins Ngarino and Nepia visited first on Saturday. They were over in Europe for a couple of weeks visiting museums and 2 meeting houses (whare nui). We took them around Cambridge, including into Trinity College below. It was a beautiful day, so was certainly nice to show off the city a bit. A […]

Because we actually know people in London (and not too many in Cambridge), it seemed like the better idea to head down to London for the Christmas holidays. And we had a *wonderful* time. Tripping Around During the week, we did touristy things and caught up with a bunch of people, namely Graham G. and Andrew M., Wendy and Abbey and finally Jess C at a Japanese noodle place I’d been dying to try. We tripped around London a bit […]

I’ve been slack. You see, I missed some posts. Important posts too. After we left Melbourne, and before we flew to London, we were in New Zealand. For 3 whole weeks. And I haven’t posted anything about it at all! Hopeless, yea? So, we were in NZ, which was wonderful. We got to see our family and friends. There were dinners, movie trips, and we only spent two nights out of town, optimizing the time at home! This post is […]

So, after a wonderful week out at Wendy’s and Abbey’s place, we went to crash at Caroline’s for a few nights. She had a beautiful whare with Gareth a couple of other kiwis out in Chiswick. They lived in a 3 bedroom place with separate bathroom, separate luandry and a good sized living room. We also love the size of the garden! Of course, it was great to see Caroline and Gareth. They cooked us NZ roast lamb that first […]

So, I went back to NZ for a brief 3 1/2 days. It was a great 3 1/2 days though. Got to catch up some friends, and went out every night, and generally had a great time. So thanks to everyone who helped make it all fun, and sorry to the guys who I didn’t catch up with this time. So,
