We’ve been back in New Zealand almost a year now. In a few days, it will have been a whole year since we left Cambridge. Time has just *flown* by, but I’ll admit I’ve been avoiding this post, talking about Cambridge and leaving it behind. Cambridge was a beautiful city with beautiful sights to see, whether summer or winter. So maybe I won’t tell about what we will miss, but just show you instead. We enjoyed our lifestyle in Cambridge. […]

It’s been a busy few months and I’m very very behind on this blog. We’re back in NZ now – arrived at the end of October. It’s been 8 years since we’ve lived here and quite a lot has changed. But some things haven’t – coffee is delicious just about everywhere and the seafood is always fresh. NOM! For those who are curious, we have jobs – Success! Rob’s working at Compac Sorting (http://www.compactsort.com) who do automated fruit sorting, and […]

So for those of you that didn’t know, back in July le Tour de France had three stages in the UK before heading to France. The Tour started in York and ended in London. We were lucky that one of the stages started in Cambridge, so we made sure were there to wave some flags about. It was lovely to see everyone getting into the spirit, but it did make the roads packed! First all the cyclists took off, followed […]

Our friend Richard introduced us to Sloe Gin – a sweet syrupy after-dinner drink that’s made from sloes and gin. Now, we didn’t know what sloes were, but we have a much better idea now. And we didn’t know how to make sloe gin, but thanks to Richard we now do. Firstly, we have to pick the sloes. Stage 1: Picking the Sloes Well, before you actually pick the sloes, you have to walk a long way to the sloe […]

There’s this famous street graffiti artist who makes his graffiti out of ceramic tiles. It makes his work quite distinctive and its often photographed and recorded. We haven’t seen any yet, though there is some around London. We were inspired by his work, this artist called Invader, and decided to emulate his style in a mundane application – clocks. First thing was to come up with some designs. Next we get some tiles. This was more challenging than we anticipated. […]

Merry Christmas everyone! We’ve been in London the past week for Christmas, and we’ll tell you all about that soon. We were tragically disappointed that it didn’t snow *during* Christmas, and all the snow had melted by Saturday anyway! But at least the week before we left, it had snowed properly in Cambridge, and was a beautiful white snowy sight to see. We had a lovely walk around town enjoying the snowy look of the place, and wearing a Santa […]

One thing we got from our 3 day weekend was that it was getting *cold* in England. It was the coldest November on record, apparently. I say apparently, because we haven’t had a winter here before, so we don’t know any different. But we were pretty pleased with our first day of snow in Cambridge. Our street. Our backyard. I think we may like having a bit of a white winter. Even though we have to bump up the winter […]

We’ve mentioned before that Rob has a 45 minute commute to work (1.5hrs return) every day of the week. Previously, he had been paying petrol money to a coworker, but we were looking for our own ride. So, about a month ago, we finally *finally* bought a car. It’s a beautiful red Honda Jazz. 4 doors, 2 airbags, manual transmission, 1.2 litre and made in 2007. Whoop whoop! We like it much.

Aparently the last Harry Potter post sent out had bad links to images. My apologies! I’ve fixed all the image links you can see the post again – with the screen capture images from the movies this time. Read the post again… Whil I’ve got you here, I may as well drop some miscellaneous images on you. Recently it was Halloween, and because we’re on such a family oriented street, and we never had trick or treaters in Melbourne, we […]

Piece by piece we’ve been buying furniture and either carrying or cycling it home, with the one exception being the couch. A couple of weeks ago, we made out final living room purchases and construction. And with this final construction, we can consider our living room complete. Previously you’d seen Rob and I carrying a kitchen table and chairs home. Now it looks much prettier with an oilcloth table cloth below. And again there’s the leather couch we’d had delivered. […]

A few weeks ago, Rob’s mum sent us a wee care package. You see, it’s cold here. Like, much colder than we expected. It’s not even winter yet! So, we requested some of our woolen scarves and beanies. But we got a couple of presents too! A kiwiana table runner and a tea towel from Namibia. Big thanks Helen and Barry! Was a wonderful surprise in the post.

Similar to home, they let farmers put their cattle in public parks. Either that or the land is owned by farmers, and people are allowed through it. Regardless, on a recent cycling trip about town, we stopped to snap some cattle. They looked pretty chilled out. Nice.

It’s been getting cold in Cambridge. And its started to rain a lot. When I say rain, I mean drizzle. It likes to drizzle here. So, a couple of weekends ago, we were pleasantly surprised to see it was sunny. So we decided to wander, and take advantage of it. We may not get many more. So here’s some snaps around Cambridge. This is one of the tourist signs in Cambridge, marking out various sites. They’re all over the cbd. […]

We love our house. But. Our house has no cupboards, except the kitchen. So, there’s no cupboards for linen; no cupboards for electrical cables; no cupbaords for sports gear… No cupboards! Gah! So, the compromise is to make places to hide the things of life. With boxes. But, this looks yucky. It might be hiding linen, towels, backpacks and more, but it doesn’t look visually pleasing. So, we went out and bought some simple decorating materials. And now, it all […]

We’re still setting up house. Because we’ve been buying furniture from Argos, its all flat packed. We still don’t have a car so transport is a bit fun… Its nice to have new things, but essentials like a coffee table are just satisfying. We also have the less essential, but super tidy, shoe cabinet so then we can hide all our shoes at the front door. Fantastic. Big thanks to Rob for putting all the stuff together!

As a farewell for Stewart and Amanda, Rob made pancakes and bananas for breakfast. Yum! He decided to be fancy and do banana flambe. Bring on the flame! But first, dice your bananas. Add them to your hot pan. Add a tablespoon of golden syrup. Fry and let the bananas caramelise. Now, it’s time for alcohol! You’re meant to use rum, but we didn’t have any. So whisky will do. Add the whisky to the super hot pan, tip a […]

Our little street is a nice one. A no exit one, which makes it quiet. Just big long rows of terraced houses, all probably exactly the same size as ours. The power lines are interesting – they all spread out from 1 pole which happens to be right outside our house. Piece by piece, we’re accumulating furniture making our new home. Magazines help much. And having a bit of a starting budget to play with. Rob’s computer now has a […]

It’s summer over here and the days are quite long with sunset at 8pm or so. Seems like a good excuse to make use of our newly tidied garden. We discovered that the back garden shed includes lots of things for our use, including garden furniture. A simple meal was had – Spaghetti Bolognese with beans. And beer. We plugged in the laptop at the kitchen window for music (the only piece of technology plugged in at this stage – […]

After we bought that table and chairs, the other thing we got straight into was buying plates and cutlery, pots and pans. This series of shots basically shows you our wee kitchen, the only down fall of this property (water damage to the floor, peeling paint on the walls) but is nice enough. In the UK, it’s popular for pots and pans to be coloured, so we got some modest ones, but good quality. Rob decided to cook carbonara for […]

It took us a while to find. The market is very competitive here. Just renting, not buying. But for now, it’s ours. And we’re so thrilled… However, my first half hour with this red door here wasn’t all joy. My keys didn’t work and it was raining! Darn it! But the real-estate agent came around and showed me how to get to the back door (we go through the second red door and walk round the back. 🙂 ) And […]
